Best Career Options for Fresh Graduates in Pakistan — Trakora career guide

The first year after graduation in Pakistan is usually spent applying widely and learning slowly. Graduates who move faster tend to do one thing differently: they pick two or three concrete entry routes, learn exactly how each one selects candidates, and build evidence for those specific filters rather than sending the same CV everywhere.

Six realistic entry routes and how each one selects

1. Public service commissions. CSS through FPSC for the federal services, and PMS and departmental posts through PPSC, SPSC, KPPSC, and BPSC. Selection is by written examination, then interview. Preparation is a multi-month project in English composition, current affairs, and subject papers. The advantage is a structured career and job security; the cost is time, with no partial credit for near-misses.

2. Bank management trainee programmes. HBL, UBL, MCB, Meezan, Bank Alfalah, and Standard Chartered recruit graduate batches through aptitude tests and assessment centres, usually advertised on their own careers pages and through university placement offices. Business, economics, and increasingly engineering graduates all enter this route.

3. Technology roles. Systems Limited, NETSOL, Netsol-adjacent service firms, and product companies such as Careem, Bazaar, and Sastaticket hire on demonstrated ability. A public GitHub profile with two finished projects beats a long list of course names. Entry is possible for non-CS graduates who can show working code.

4. Accounting, audit, and finance. The Big Four and larger local firms take trainees for CA articleship and ACCA-track roles. This is a low-salary, high-learning start with a strong exit market afterwards in industry finance.

5. Development sector and research. UN agencies, international NGOs, provincial programme units, and think tanks recruit programme officers, monitoring and evaluation associates, and research assistants. They select on written work - a strong writing sample and evidence you can handle data are the filters.

6. Export services and freelancing. Building a client base through Upwork, Fiverr, or direct outreach. Pakistan has one of the world's larger freelance workforces. It rewards written English, delivery discipline, and a functioning payment setup through Payoneer or a permitted bank channel.

Match your degree to a route without being trapped by it

An engineering graduate can enter technology, banking, the commissions, or the development sector - PEC registration matters only for engineering practice itself. A BBA graduate is competitive in banking, audit, and marketing. A social science graduate is well placed for the commissions, development, and research. A medical graduate has a defined clinical path but also routes into public health, health systems, and pharmaceutical roles. What limits people is rarely the degree; it is applying to a route without producing the evidence that route selects on.

Build one artefact per route

  • Commissions: A set of timed, handwritten essays and precis with feedback from someone who has passed the paper.
  • Banking: A financial model or ratio analysis of a listed Pakistani company using its published annual report, with a one-page written conclusion.
  • Technology: A deployed application with a public URL and a readable repository.
  • Audit and finance: A reconciled set of accounts for a small real business - a family shop counts - prepared properly.
  • Development and research: A four-page brief analysing a real dataset, for instance from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
  • Freelancing: Three completed samples and two client testimonials, even from unpaid initial work.

Each of these takes two to four weeks and gives an interviewer something concrete to discuss. A CV with one artefact and a link outperforms a CV with six certificate names.

Salary expectations and how to think about the first offer

Entry salaries in Pakistan vary widely by sector and city, and published averages are unreliable. What is consistent is the pattern: audit trainee and development-sector entry roles pay less initially but open strong second jobs; bank trainee programmes pay moderately with defined progression; technology roles at export-facing firms pay the highest entry range but demand demonstrable skill; public-sector pay is scale-based and lower initially but includes allowances, pension, and security that private offers do not. Judge a first job on the quality of the second job it makes possible, not only on the starting figure - with one exception: never accept an unpaid "trial" of more than a short, defined task.

A ninety-day plan

  • Days 1-14: Pick two routes. Collect twenty live advertisements across them and list the repeated requirements.
  • Days 15-45: Build the artefact for route one. Publish it.
  • Days 46-60: Rewrite the CV around it. One page. Evidence, not adjectives. Get it reviewed by someone working in the route.
  • Days 61-90: Apply to twenty roles with a tailored opening paragraph each, and contact ten alumni from your department working in those routes for a fifteen-minute conversation.

Track outcomes in a sheet: application date, organisation, source of the advertisement, response, and stage reached. After thirty applications the pattern in your rejections tells you which filter you are failing - the CV, the test, or the interview - and that is the thing to fix next.

Sourcing note

Route descriptions here reflect openings we track and summarise from public commission advertisements, university HR portals, and company careers pages. Recruitment cycles and requirements change; confirm each vacancy on the employer's own site before applying, and never pay a fee to apply for a job in Pakistan.
